Istanpitta “Tre Fontane” is a medieval instrumental dance.
It is preserved in the British Library manuscript Add MS 29987, an important fourteenth-century Italian source containing secular and sacred music. The manuscript also includes fifteen monophonic instrumental dances known as istanpitte, among which “Tre Fontane” appears.
Tre Fontane means “three fountains.” What survives of the work is its title and original single-line melody, so modern performances often add various accompanying instruments, leaving performers considerable room for interpretation.
