A trio for two clarinets and piano
Relative deprivation is a subjective psychological phenomenon: after comparing oneself with others, or with one’s own expectations, one feels deprived because reality falls short of the object of comparison.
Like a carefully written essay missing its final period, the gradual indifference of a partner in a relationship, or the realization that one’s hard-earned result still falls short of someone with extraordinary talent, people may only become more aware of what they truly want at the moment when an expectation is taken away.
A duet for two recorders
This work received Second Place with Distinction in the Professional Duo/Trio category of the Taiwan International Recorder Festival Competition. As both composer and performer, I often encounter the same problem: no matter how I try to avoid it, the music I make always carries a certain accent. Especially on an instrument I know well, the act of composing almost determines its way of speaking, as if that were the only possible “authorial intention.”
LiSA’s “Gurenge” is the opening theme song of the anime Demon Slayer. This version is arranged for recorder quartet.
While keeping the original song’s clear melodic profile and forward drive, the arrangement redistributes the melody, accompaniment, and rhythmic functions across the ensemble.
The arrangement makes use of the recorder ensemble’s clear layers of sound and agile articulation, aiming to present the original song’s strong rhythmic character and dramatic tension.
