A duet for two recorders
This work received Second Place with Distinction in the Professional Duo/Trio category of the Taiwan International Recorder Festival Competition.
As both composer and performer, I often encounter the same problem: no matter how I try to avoid it, the music I make always carries a certain accent. Especially on an instrument I know well, the act of composing almost determines its way of speaking, as if that were the only possible “authorial intention.”
This becomes even more awkward in a piece centered on “dialogue”; I cannot make it sound as though I am simply talking to myself.
Through my partner’s interpretation, the piece gained another layer of meaning: understanding the author, understanding the music, and then speaking it with one’s own accent. Through music, the idea of a “dialogue” becomes clearer.
