A trio for two clarinets and piano
あたらよ (Atarayo) is a Japanese word for “a night so beautiful that one feels reluctant to let it end.”
While studying composition, I often find myself drawn to many musical styles and theories. I consider myself fairly open to different kinds of artistic work; early music, folk music, classical music, jazz, contemporary music, and electronic music can all make me spend a great deal of time studying them.
At the same time, this makes me think about what the music I “like” actually is, and what kinds of sounds feel beautiful to me. I tried to use more of the elements I am drawn to, including fourths, extended chords, and borrowed chords from more distant keys; these less obvious tonal shifts seem to interest me more.
Through music, this piece tries to record the atarayo that drew me into composition, while also using a more elusive sense of tonality to create a night one would be reluctant to see end.
